Boss Hog de Metolius

Are you thinking about buying your first crash pad or a supplemental pad without putting aside quality? The Boss Hog from Metolius is for you.

The Boss Hog is an upgrade of the “Fat Bastard” which was very famous mainly because of its cheap price. However, the Boss Hog should last much longer than its predecessor.

This pad is designed with a 1" top sheet of continuous closed-cell foam which is un-split at the hinge while the 2.5" open-cell inner foam and ½" closed-cell basal layer have an exclusive angle hinge design. These two last sheets of foam are very dense! This high density is just perfect to protect you from rocks when doing sit down starts but at the same time, you don't want to drop to this crash pad when you're too high because the idea of spraining your ankle comes to your mind.... But I must say I've been quickly reassured once I tested it in my gym. In the past, this pad had a major drawback (splitted at the hinge with a gutter) which could make the folding point quite dangerous. Metolius fixed this problem using continuous foam with 45º hinge.

The finish is impressive. The seams are very tough. The Boss Hog is encased in ultra-durable ballistic fabric with hypalon reinforced corners. The “drop zone” of this pad is covered with auto carpet which keeps your shoes clean before tackling probs. Something else to consider is that this carpet may be prone to fray and tear in the long run keeping waste such as dead leaves onto the pad. But the main advantage of this carpet is that it makes the pad waterproof keeping moisture out of the foam.

The Boss Hog is equipped with a fabric flap and speed-hook aluminium buckles (guaranteed for life) to close the pad. This allows you to load all the gear you need for your climbing session. On the other hand, this pad has less room than "burritos" type pads such as the "Temple from Flashed".

Two drag handles comes with the Boss Hog. One handle is designed to transport the pad as a suitcase, and the other one allows you to easily move your crash pad once unfolded. The two padded shoulder straps and the waist belt are very useful for pad transport but remain less comfortable and handy than those used by other companies.

In conclusion, I'd say this crash pad is very well designed and is just perfect as a supplemental pad when you've already got bigger pads.
