Entrevue - Alex Johnson

It's time to meet the 2009 Americain National Champion, Alex Johnson.

What model and brand was your 1st climbing shoes?
My first shoe was a Five Ten Moccasym that was way too big for me.

What is the best place in the world for bouldering?
I don’t know! I’ve only really climbed in Colorado and Bishop, CA, and they were both great.

In how many country did you go to climb?
I have competed in probably a dozen countries, but have only climbed outdoors in the US and Canada.

Where and why did you start climbing?
I began climbing at a gym in St. Paul, Minnesota, when I was 8, and when I started it was just something new and fun to do.

Have you ever take part of Climbing World Cup?
I have only competed in one, the Bouldering World Cup in Vail. Hopefully I’ll end up doing more sometime.

What do you think about bouldering as sport in Olympic Games?
I think it would be amazing, and the sport of climbing would rapidly become popular. It would be great.

Do you often climb in gym?
Yes, I climb a lot indoors, the ratio of inside to outside is about even. Sometimes it’s easier to just climb in a gym.

Did you ever trained for a specific project?
No

Who do you admire?
People who do what they love for the right reasons

What was the last book you read?

The Bright Forever. I forgot who the author is.

What music do you listen?
Pretty much anything!

What do you think about solo climbing?
It’s terrifying and dangerous, but my opinion on it may change.

What is a highball for you? At what height it begins to be a highball?
I’m not really sure there is a specific height, a highball for me is a climb where there is potential to be afraid at the top.

Was your progression fast or does it takes years?
I think it was pretty quick, but then again I have been climbing for years.

Did you take part of a specific training to help your progression?
No, nothing besides climbing. And I ran track in high school.

What do you like to eat?
I love pizza!

What is your best meal in a crag?
Chocolate chip bagels and Goldfish crackers.

Do you plan to climb all your life?
Absolutely

After Sharma, Nicole and Lamiche, would you like to design a climbing shoe?

Haha, no, I would have no idea what I’m doing.

Have you ever shape holds?
Yes I tried shaping a few for Nicros, but none of them ever really turned out that cool.

What is the "bad-ass" place to climb?
Poudre Canyon!

What is the best developments in climbing history?
I have no idea.

What item you don't want to forget to put in your bag before living to the crag?
My shoes!

What is the best climbing DVD?
I thought Memento was interesting. King Lines was good as well.

Cookies or chips?
Chips, I’m not really a sweets person.

Beer or wine?
Unofficially beer.

Do you consider yourself as a pro climber?
Haha, no.

What is your graduation status?
I’m currently in my sophomore year of college at Colorado State, but am planning on taking time off starting now.

Crimps, slopes or pinch?

Crimps! I am SO terrible at slopers and pinches.

Describe a memorable moment in you climbing experience.

Climbing my first actual outdoor boulder problem in Southern Illinois; Body Karate.

What else than climbing do you like to do?

I like to run and kayak and hang out with friends.

Any advises or suggestions?
Always try hard!
